He has an ex-wife, Martha, who got a generous divorce settlement; a trophy wife, Serena, thirty-two years younger than he; an eleven-month-old daughter; and three children from his first marriage, two of whom are older than his wife. It is so unlike what I usually read.

For us, though, it's just the best of times. The writing throughout this long book remains at a consistently high level, and even chapters which I later considered superfluous were brilliantly written. I ADORED Bonfire, but this? Was Trump Wolfe's model for this character? Can't recommend it otherwise. He captures the human spirit so excruciatingly well its a revelation to see it written in words. I couldn't put this book down, and even though it slightly fell to pieces in the last fifty pages, it didn't matter when the previous 680 or so had kept me in thrall. He creates so much suspense and anxiety in very real-life kinds of situations.

A Man in Full is another massive Wolfe effort, 742 pages in length, which reveals his indebtedness to the nineteenth century French naturalists and Victorian realists. a man in full summary

Tom Wolfe can write. To begin, Wolfe introduces Charlie Croker, who cares about losing his status as a rich developer, even if he has to make questionable compromises. I have read The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test and The Bonfire of the Vanities and this is by far his greatest accomplishment.

Firstly, one has to doff the cap to Tom Wolfe’s prose style. Ignore the. Since it is one of my 2011 challenge books, I gave it another go, and finally finished it. Tom Wolfe's 1998 novel 'A Man in Full' is very close to being an American homage to Charles Dickens in style. This book might not have captured the zeitgeist as fully as some of Wolfe's other books, but I think time will be very kind to it.

This is a great book in style, and voice and with the prison, the earthquake and the character who spoke Hawaiian pigeon. The protagonist is Charles Croker, once a college football star, now a late-middle-aged Atlanta conglomerate king whose outsize ego has at last hit up against reality.

The setting is Atlanta, Georgia — a racially mixed, late-century boomtown full of fresh wealth and wily politicians.

A Man In Full features a number of point-of-view characters. Similarly, for most of A Man in Full, Charlie is fighting for his fortune and the life that he has known in the Southeast, while Conrad suffers on the West Coast. I see it the exact same way. This would probably be pretty good as a Readers Digest Condensed story.

The leitmotifs to Epictetus added substance to the work. This is why something as, unfortunately, commonplace as a rape case is turned into a sprawling (nearly 700 pages!) Charles (Charlie) Croker a middle-aged prominent Atlanta businessman finds his life turned up-side down when his ego brings him to a staggering debt load and to the brink of bankruptcy.

I think this means the book's fictional characters and intertwined plots which spin around each other must be based on real life with the names changed to mask what were real people and events. H. The first 772 pages of this novel may rank among some of the best American mainstream fiction ever written.

But he strains our credibility which was so wonderfully created in Wolfe's art up to the Epilogue. I read it when it came out and still remember parts of it vividly - Charlie Croker's almost invisible women, the rape, the meat factory, the jail, Plato and Socrates, the machinations of racial politics, and the kingly pride of real estate moguls who literally shape our cities. Without a doubt the best book I've ever read in my literary career. This is the first Tom Wolfe book I've read.

Wolfe certainly took his time in creating his opus maximus and his work ethic is worthy of great respect. It is set primarily in Atlanta, with a significant portion of the story also transpiring in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. For over 700 pages Tom Wolfe sustains and enthralls you. “One of the few freedoms that we have as human beings that cannot be taken away from us is the freedom to assent to what is true and to deny what is false. This book focuses on Georgia and Atlanta places I really don’t know too much about. The story builds rather well but the ending does a poor job of wrapping up the story lines. These include Charles "Cap'm Charlie" Croker, a real estate mogul and member of Atlanta's high society who is suddenly facing bankruptcy; Martha Croker, his first wife, trying to maintain her social standing without her husband; Ray Peepgass, who is trying illegally to capitalize on Croker's fall; Roger "Too White" White II, a prominent black lawyer; and Conrad Hensley, a young man in prison who discovers Stoic philosophy. It is the ONLY book I have ever done that with but I didn't want anyone to pick it up and read it and have me be responsible for it in any way, shape, or form. This is the story of 4 main characters as they come to find out what potential lies within each of them.
